Pick: American Dreams in China
Director: Peter Ho-sun Chan
Showtime: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 12 p.m at Ryerson Theatre
American Dreams in China follows Meng Xiaojun (Deng Chao), Wang Yang (Tong Dawei), and Cheng Dongqing (Huang Xiaoming) have dreams of getting a student visa for the United states – however, only one is successful. Meng soon learns that his imperfect English is holding him back in the States, which ultimately pushes the trio to start a fluency teaching business in Beijing.
American Dreams in China has been called “the Chinese Social Network,” evidently marking it as a smart and dramatic telling of a true story. This movie is important to see at the festival as it draws attention to the emotional aspect of global success, and the real-life hardwork of students whose idea lead them to a billion dollar business.
