TIFF Pick of the Day: September 15, 2013

Pick: Gravity
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Showtime: Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 12 p.m at Ryerson Theatre

Astronauts Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) and Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) are tethered to a space craft 600 kilometers above earth, when suddenly disaster strikes. Together, the astronauts put their differences aside to work together and get home safely without the help of NASA command.

Alfonso Cuarón has an unmistakably gorgeous vision. His past works include co-directing Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, directing Y tu mama tambien, Children of Men, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, an entry into the wizarding world far darker and ambiguous than the previous films. There is much hype surrounding Gravity, most notably for its star studded cast. However, what the trailer doesn’t necessarily show off is Cuarón’s skilled story telling that will practically lift you off your seat rather than sit on the edge. Gravity is a must-see film for the festival, for Cuarón’s artistry and masterful attention to human emotion, relationships, and turmoil will have you revisiting the movies again.
