Winter Skincare Solutions

Skincare products on a shelf

Winter is in full force! So long dewy skin and beachy hair waves from the downtown humidity. Now, your sweating sources from the multiple layers of winter gear required to survive the brutal outdoor conditions.

Here are a few crucial tips to save your skin and ease your body during the long winter months ahead…

Your face is your identity. It is beautiful and allows you to express who you are as a person. Why would you want to hide behind dryness or discolouration? Revive your skin with these supple aids.

Get rid of the extra flakes of dry skin and shed a new layer to the surface with tiny microbeads. Exfoliate two to three times a week during the winter as you wear more product and moisturizer to keep your skin protected. Bring forward your soft, fresh and glowing skin. There are various do-it-yourself exfoliating recipes roaming around the internet, but here are two products you cannot go wrong with. And, they’re affordable

La Roche Posay Ultra Fine Scrub (~$20.00): Worth every penny. This scrub does all the work for you and comes in a small size, making it last just the right amount of time before expiring. Be gentle and let the millions of tiny beads clean your pores for you. It will feel amazing after.

St. Ives Fresh Face Apricot Scrub (~$3.00): Classic, affordable and works. The natural formula containing apricot will smell amazing and clear all dirt and grime off your face.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

This cannot be and will never be repeated enough! Contrary to popular belief, moisturizer will not make your skin produce excess oil or cause further breakouts. In fact, the opposite holds true. Your skin is your largest organ and you need to sooth it with lotion. By replenishing the natural pH levels in our skin by providing moisture, your skin will not produce as much oil to make up for these losses. It has the opposite effect of causing acne. The winter winds and freezing snow storms will only dry out your cheeks even more. Think about all the artificial heat your face is coming in contact with inside your room every night to stay warm. Here are some reliable and affordable brands that’ll keep your face looking supple:

Neutrogena Hydro-Boost Gel Cream Moisturizer (~$20.00): Gel base is lighter for those who may have more oily skin. Very light and can be built up with more layers.

Avène Thermal Spring Water (~10.00): Spray this one throughout the day when you feel your skin needs an extra hit of moisture! Convenient and comes in travel sizes.

Clinique Moisture Surge 72 Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator (~$20.00): Light feeling but soaks in deep to provide all day facial moisture.

Yes, even in the winter. You may not think you are coming in contact with any sun but the sheer brightness from the snow and reflection alone has the potential to seep into your skin, leading to advanced aging spots and dark marks. A simple layer of sunscreen on top of your moisturizer will shield your face from these harmful rays. You may not notice the advantages right now, but your future self will be so thankful. Even a low SPF rating like 30 will do the job to keep your complexion even and toned.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch SPF 60 (~25.00): Super good for anyone that is scared- like me- of extra oil seeping into my skin from sunscreen. This dry formula is really just that- dry and soaks in within seconds, leaving your face matte and not oily at all. Also works great as a primer!

CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 50 (~15.00): CeraVe is a reputable brand for their pH maintenance and constant care for all skin types. This sunscreen is lightweight and will not feel heavy on the cheeks.

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer Plus Sunscreen SPF 30 (~15.00): Best of both worlds as this moisturizer also provides some SPF protection. It is not a coincidence they’re combined, you really need both products to protect your skin and this one works well with all-natural ingredients too!

Avoid Waterproof Cosmetics

These products helped you survive those outdoor lake days and sweaty dancing nights in the summertime. And I agree, there is definitely a time and a place for waterproof mascara and eyeliner- but winter is not it! Waterproof cosmetics dry out your eyelashes and make your skin more sensitive after continuous use. Your eye area is already going to be extra dry as it is, especially around your eyelids. Eyelashes take 3-6 months to completely grow back so save yourself the hassle and invest in a hydrating mascara for the winter.

Your lips frame your smile. No one wants them cracked and bleeding while trying to talk with others. Make sure you are constantly applying lip balm to your lips, a simple swipe will do! One helpful tip is to buy a pack of two or three at any local drugstore, then put one in each of your jacket pockets or in your most used backpacks or purses. Next time you put your hands in your coat while walking out the door, you will already be prepared.

Burts Bees Lip Scrub (~13.00): Scrub your lips and make them smell like fresh honey with this all natural product. By scrubbing your lips, you will bring forward blood flow and make them appear more colourful and fuller naturally!

Vaseline Rosy Lips Lip Therapy (~$5.00): Smells amazing and adds some colour to your pout. Only con is it comes in a circular tin so you have to use your fingers for application.

Nivea Essential Moisture Lip Care (~5.00 for 2): Easy application, great reputable skin care brand and really hydrates your lips for hours.

After every shower, apply that body lotion everywhere! It only takes a few extra minutes and makes a world of difference. Though the majority of your body is covered up during the winter season with layers and socks and sweaters, your skin is still being exposed to the harsher fabrics like wool along with artificial heating. Your skin may become itchy when you lay down at night due to its exposure to these conditions during the day. Simply applying a body lotion after a shower will soak in and make you smell even more amazing. Bring a small sample size hand lotion in your bag for quick situations! Your nails need that moisture too, especially after being freezing inside your pockets while wandering outdoors.

St. Ives Body Lotion (~8.00): Choose your favourite scent! Soaks in well and helps you smell even better for your long day ahead.

Palmers Coconut Butter Formula with Vitamin E (~$6.00): Vitamin E helps soothe any scars or blemishes in the skin while the classic coconut formula adds an uplifting scent.

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion (~$6.00): All natural and reliable brand, soaks in well and scent is very neutral.

Everyone has their unique hair type, colour, style and length. Regardless of all these attributes, moisture needs to be locked in to prevent the winter enemy- static cling. By simply letting your conditioner stay on for an extra minute or using a leave-in spray, this enemy can be defeated. Some really amazing hair masks listed below will help keep your strands hydrated for days. In a pinch too, a simple laundry sheet will take away any frizz! Run one though your hair and watch the static disappear.

L’Orèal EverPure Repair Remedy Mask (~$10.00): Reliable brand, smells very soothing and will leave your locks hydrated without the weight of additional product.

Marc Anthony Hair Mask Packets (~4.00): Variety of scents and easy to use! Smells amazing and will keep hair ends super moist for days.
